What is female genital mutilation?
Female genital mutilation is the removal of tissue from any part of the female genitalia for cultural, religious or any other reasons without a medical basis. The almost total loss of sensitivity is the main consequence for those affected, with the added psychological trauma. There are women who bleed to death or infection in the weeks after the intervention, since it is almost always done in a rudimentary way, by healers or older women, and not very orthodox tools such as crystals, knives or razor blades.
